Cycling in Scotland
My type of cycling is very much recreational and a method of seeing different parts of the country while getting a bit of exercise. I'm well past the stage of life where you want to test yourself and push your physical limits so lots of coffee stops are more my thing.
I like to explore the many traffic free routes that now allow you to get around a lot of the country using specially constructed paths, old railway lines and canal and river bank paths. The Sustrans network publishes maps of these routes which are available from their website.
In addition there are many routes specially constructed and signed by local authorities or National Parks such as the West Loch Lomond trail.
The summer of 2017 was quite an adventurous one on the cycling front and I managed to cycle Coast to Coast and End to End of our island which makes me a bit of a late starter but better late than never.
I also managed a couple of New Zealand's bike trails and have included descriptions of those.
2020 was a wash out for most things because of Covid and cycle trips were restricted to day trips. Restrictions were relaxed briefly during the summer and we did fit in a really good tour of NE Scotland.
2021 was also badly affected by Covid but I managed to fit in a three day coast to coast route from Workington to Tynemouth on my own and a three day cycle along the Tweed Way from Lanark to Berwick-on-Tweed with two friends. This was our first cycle trip in the borders and made us wonder why we haven't spent more time there.
