Great Cumbrae is an island off the west coast of Scotland just a couple of miles from the town of Largs. It is commonly referred to by the name of its principal town, Millport and with the ferry trip only taking about 15 minutes, it is a very popular place for day trips. The ferry landing slip is 4 miles from the town of Millport which means that it is walkable but a shuttle bus service operates between the ferry and the town. The total distance around the island is about 10 miles making it a very easy cycle ride and the road is remarkably traffic free. The road hugs the shore most of the way and the views from all parts of the island make it a very enjoyable circuit. The views of Arran are particularly enjoyable and halfway down the west side of the island at Fintry Bay, there is a little cafe with outside seating where you can enjoy the view over to Arran while taking a break. The town of Millport is a picturesque huddle of handsome sandstone houses with cafes and shops all the way along the main street. It also has a harbour and beaches for holiday makers to explore.
